What is PTSD?

Post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a psychiatric disorder that can result from experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. But finding effective treatment for PTSD — and the depression that often comes with it –can be difficult.

We often think of PTSD when a man or woman returns from active combat, and is traumatized by the experience. You might over-react to an unexpected sound, or bright light, or a voice. The trigger could be a well-intended pat on your back, or you might awaken at night after a nightmare … and the nightmare still seems real.

Flashbacks of the traumatic event are common, and seem so real to you that you believe you’re back in that experience. As a result, you may treat the loved ones around you as though they are part of that terrible drama, and react toward them in a way you never would if you were feeling like your normal self.

PTSD Affects More People Than Just Military Personnel

But any terrifying and traumatic event can cause PTSD.

If you’ve experienced domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, a terrible auto accident, wreckage of any form of transportation, or a natural disaster such as fire, violent destructive weather, or war, you may have times when you feel like you’re back in that experience.

You may need PTSD and depression treatment for the trauma you’ve suffered that led to PTSD and to depression and that replays itself so that you and your family continue to suffer.

About Soldiers and PTSD … About You and PTSD

Men and women in the military who experience active combat have seen and lived with trauma every day.

But some men, women, and children have seen and lived with trauma every day in their everyday lives at home and at work.

If you’ve lived this, you know what I mean. How those experiences affect you in the long-run depends on a variety of factors.

  • Your frame of mind at the time
  • How the experiences affected you at the time
  • Your genetic makeup
  • How personal the losses were to you
  • How violent and terrifying the experiences were for you

Unfortunately, there’s a great deal of shame associated with PTSD, and many who suffer do so in silence. You may fear you’ll appear weak if others know what you’re going through. Your family may be sworn to secrecy because of your fear of humiliation, which causes pain and trauma for family members. And worst of all, you may be thinking about ending your life ...

If you’ve wondered about soldiers and PTSD, there are reasons some combat veterans suffer from PTSD and others don’t. Reasons why some people get PTSD after a sexual assault, an accident, or a disaster, and others don’t. Read more about PTSD to get answers to your questions here.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder isn’t just something that affects one individual. It encompasses the whole family.
